Taking the bus is one of the most convenient and affordable ways to get around our city.  The public transit systems in our region (Hamilton Street Railway, Burlington Transit, St Catharines Transit, Welland Transit, etc.) carry millions of passengers per year and operates comprehensive bus routes.

The Totally Transit for Older Adults program introduces people to the their local public transit system, and provides them with the information needed to use it effectively. The program specifically caters to older adults or to newcomers to transit.

Green Venture offers workshops  on local bus services, tailoring the presentation to the immediate local system and focuses on the neighbourhood around the workshop location.

Topics such as local bus routes, bus fare and passes, seniors’ discounts, and trip planning will be covered. Older adults will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to confidently navigate public transit. The 2017 program also includes information on using bicycles with the bus system, as well as on-bike hands-on cycling introduction and safety, courtesy of New Hope Community Bikes. Other topics include how to use Google maps to plan your trip, for those who use the internet.

Aall workshop participants will have the opportunity to have personalized bus trip planning to up to two destinations.  Green Venture will work with participants step by step instructions explaining how to take the bus to their destinations, and there will be a sign-up option for chaperoned bus trip, with a trained bus travel guide volunteer.  Free bus tickets will be provided for such a follow-up. The travel guide will orient them on how to use the bus while they ride, before travelling back to their starting point on the bus together.

A similar sign-up for a guided neighbourhood cycling ride will be part of the 2017 program, again courtesy of New Hope Community Bikes.  New Hope will lead a group of cyclists to move from a central location to a common destination, and back.
