Green Venture Volunteer Opportunities
Outdoor volunteers assist in gardening or landscaping projects or other things at the EcoHouse education centre site. This work mostly takes place between April and October. EcoHouse grounds volunteers assist with maintaining the EcoHouse demonstrations, grounds and gardens, through weeding, watering, mulching, planting, mowing, light carpentry, etc.
Green Venture volunteer work parties are organized on Thursday during the day-time, every week from April – November, although there is some flexibility possible for other volunteering times. Green Venture does not usually have volunteer work parties on weekends, however. In the case of the vegetable demonstration gardens, our EcoHouse volunteers also may, at their option, share in the produce from the vegetables grown over the course of a season.
Note that Green Venture also rents garden plots in the community garden. Citizens are welcome to rent a personal garden plot separate entirely from volunteer work at the EcoHouse site. This option has more flexibility, in terms of when volunteers may attend their garden plots.
Special Event Volunteers
Special Event volunteers assist at various activities Green Venture is doing in the community and on-site. These are usually one-offs or other one-day-a-month volunteering. One example is the “My Green Adventures” open houses.
Special events volunteer opportunities can vary widely from month to month and it is best to ask of staff what the current upcoming volunteering opportunities are.
Green Venture generally does not have much volunteer work in the office, unless it is in a coop or intern capacity, as such work usually requires a sustained commitment, often involving several days a week and/or longer hours than 1 or 2 above. This type of work requires someone to be working on a file in the office almost every day, to keep on top of things. If you are interested in a longer term intern or coop placement, please ask our staff about it.
Education Program Volunteers
Green Venture also accepts volunteers who work with education programs several times a month, delivering content to children’s tours visiting EcoHouse as part of a school trip. This work is also mostly in the fall and spring.
Any of our volunteer work usually requires some paperwork (volunteer application, job description sign-off, training in Green Venture programs where applicable) and possibly such other requirements as a police check.
