JOB POSTING: Program Assistant – Gardening and Stewardship (1 position)

Position type: Part-time, contract until August 11 2024

30 hours per week, rate of pay, $20.80

Location: Hamilton, Ontario with flexible work from home

Start date: May 20, 2024 or sooner

The Gardening and Stewardship Program Assistants will support the development and delivery of programming related to environmentally-friendly gardening and community greening and conduct maintenance and stewardship of gardens and demonstration sites with community volunteers. Garden maintenance and stewardship will occur at EcoHouse and in the community. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and develop gardens, environmental displays and restoration sites at EcoHouse and in the community, including native species gardens, and organic vegetable gardens.
  • Support community garden planning, management and harvesting. 
  • Assist in plant propagation, vermicomposting, seed library stewardship, and invasive plant management. 
  • Prepare special event and project work plans, schedules, and materials.
  • Assist with the planning, promotion and delivery of community outreach programs and green infrastructure projects. 
  • Support delivery of program workshops and webinars (online or in-person). 
  • Recruit, train and engage a variety of volunteers in gardening and stewardship activities. 
  • Create engaging and educational posts related to biodiversity, gardening, and food security on Green Venture’s blog, newsletter, traditional and social media outlets. 
  • Support general Green Venture communications, inquiries and events
  • Other opportunities may arise from time to time that require support.

We are looking for candidates that meet most of the following qualifications:

  • A combination of post-secondary education/experience in a relevant field (e.g. environmental science, biology, horticulture, landscape architecture, outdoor recreation).
  • Willingness and ability to work regularly in an outdoor environment, including performing functions related to gardening, such as digging, pruning, weeding, litter pick up.
  • Skills and experience with organic food gardening, urban agriculture, or native plant gardening, including plant identification skills.
  • Enthusiastic and creative self-starter, with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media (Instagram, Facebook), web, and graphic design software (e.g. Photoshop, Canva, WordPress, MailChimp). 
  • Knowledge of environmental issues in Hamilton and commitment to the environment as demonstrated through previous volunteer commitments and/or employment.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and building community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Class G driver’s license and access to a vehicle (or reliable form of transportation to get around the city).
  • Must be able to obtain a Police Reference Check upon acceptance of the position.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid + CPR is an asset.

Our team is focused on making positive environmental action happen every day and we use creativity, practical tools, and demonstrating environmental action to engage our community to achieve our mission. We are building our team to support two key strategic objectives: to work with Hamilton youth to drive climate action, and to help Hamiltonians make their day to day lives greener. 

 

About the Position:

The Environmental Education Assistant will design and deliver environmental education programming to children from Kindergarten to Grade 12, including creating Community Science projects for students across Hamilton to participate in, with the goal of engaging youth in climate change adaptation and mitigation. Possible areas of focus include urban forestry/tree health, invasive species, water quality, and green infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be an experienced community educator to develop and deliver environmental education outreach programming, an engaging and creative communicator with a passion for empowering community and youth environmental action, and a collaborative and flexible team-player.

 

We are looking for a candidate that meets most of the following qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education and/or professional experience in the fields of science and/or education.
  • A working knowledge of current environmental issues, particularly as they relate to climate change.
  • A deep interest in environmental protection.
  • Enthusiastic and creative self-starter, with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience delivering education programs, community presentations, and/or workshops to children or adults.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Google Suite, social media content creation and management, digital communication tools and strategies, and design software (e.g. WordPress, MailChimp, Photoshop, Canva) and in mobile data collection technology.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and building community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Class G driver’s license and clean driving record and access to a vehicle, or alternative way to get around the city.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid + CPR certification an asset.
  • Must be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check upon acceptance of the position.

Eligibility requirements: 

These positions may be funded through Federal youth employment programs with the following requirements of applicants:

  • Between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the intervention; 
  • Be Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; 
  • Not currently be in school;
  • Self identifies as Indigenous, youth living with a disability, or a woman, or a racialized youth or a  youth who are living in a Northern or Remote community; 
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada; and 
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

    

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time, 11 month contract, with possibility of extension pending funding.
  • Salary starting at $37,800.
  • 35 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend work required. 
  • Primarily work from home but the successful candidate will be required to attend our EcoHouse office in Stoney Creek and community events onsite in Hamilton approximately 1-3 days/week (occasionally 5 days) and some evenings and weekends.

About the Opportunity: We are continually looking for Registered Home Energy Advisors to join our team.

Qualifications:

Knowledge or experience in Building Science, Home Construction or Home Inspections
Excellent customer service skills as well as a professional manner
Excellent verbal and written communication, highly organized, attention to detail with a positive attitude and interest in the Energy and Environment sectors
Analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
Highly developed math and computer skills
Proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel and Web Based Applications with an aptitude to learn internal software and relevant applications

Further Requirements and Qualifications:
Completion of a criminal background check
Valid Ontario driver’s license, full G required
Access to a personal insured vehicle as well as being able to travel to surrounding communities along with general and automotive liability coverage.
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Acquisition and maintenance of Registered Energy Advisor Certification with NRCan.
Successful completion of the Foundation Level Exam is required prior to training. Additional training provided by Green Communities Canada (Service Organization) is required.
