Let’s talk about air quality at our annual Clean Air Day!
Green Venture is discussing Air Quality and its importance within our community at our upcoming Clean Air Day event as part of Health Canada’s nationwide effort to celebrate and increase awareness about clean air. Good air quality might not be something you think of on a daily basis, but it’s something that we definitely require everyday. For example, how often do you check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for your area ? Checking the AQHI is a great way to see the Air Quality of your area and learn a little about how our air quality changes daily. Having clean air is more important than we realize a lot of the time, and Green Venture is hosting our Annual Clean Air Day event as a celebration of clean air and a place of learning for how we can protect air quality.
Clean Air Day will feature film campaigns created by students from local schools about keeping our air clean, and a keynote presenter on the 4th floor of the Hamilton Public Library’s Central Branch. Participants will also be able to interact with our community partners at local booths, or sign-up beforehand to get their belongings repaired at the Repair Cafe.

Why care about our air?
Many of us remember the wildfires of last year that not only caused dramatic environmental impacts on our Northern ecosystems. These wildfires also carried a lasting impact on Southern Ontario’s air quality. The sky changed colour and schools across the province were forced to stay inside. Wildfires are just one of the many ways we can see the change in our quality, but the changes don’t stop there. Our lungs, heart and brain are shown to be the most impacted by air pollution and our lungs don’t have any adaptations to help protect us from the particulate matter release from cars and engine combustions (PM 2.5).
In order to maintain a functional and healthy society we need to educate ourselves on how to protect our air and collaborate with each other to make creative solutions. Clean Air Day is a perfect place to start!
Repair Cafe
Clean Air Day will have many fun-filled booths and activities. One of our main sections will be dedicated to a repair cafe. Repair Cafes are scheduled booths with volunteer Menders that dedicate their time to help repair our broken objects, such as clothes, watches, knife sharpening, etc. Repair Cafes are super important for our air quality as the manufacturing process behind making new things for us involves pollution of our air in some way, shape, or form. When we extend the lifespan of what we already have instead of buying products brand new, we encourage reduction in manufacturing, which in turn reduces the pollution byproduct of the process.
