In the midst of uncertainty, Green Venture launched the Backyard Garden Project in late May as a part of our COVID-19 resilience project. We are inspired by the continued demonstration of support, connectedness, and resilience within our community.
In keeping with our mission to support and empower Hamiltonians to build a greener, more sustainable, and climate friendly future, it was an opportune time to invest in the continued development of a more local, sustainable, and equitable food system. The Backyard Garden Project launched aiming to support this mission by expanding Green Venture’s existing green gardening programs to ensure that as many people who wish to garden locally and grow food at home were provided with the tools and education necessary to venture into a greener future.
As a part of The Backyard Garden Project growers directly contributed to reducing the emissions and environmental impacts involved in the travel and transportation of food, supported the development of sustainable, independent, and healthy green communities, and aided in increasing the accessibility of local and nutritious food for others.
As warm weather set in, our Backyard Garden Growers committed to planting an extra row of produce in their gardens to later donate to food banks, helping to fight local food insecurity. These urban growing practices encourage the development of sustainable food chains and healthy, independent communities.
With the community hard at work in their gardens we began donations to Neighbour to Neighbour Hamilton, who support 1,200 Hamilton families each month. In the first week, 60.5lbs of fresh garden produce from members of our community. Green Venture is pleased to announce that through this resilience project a total of 341.50LBS was donated to our local food share program.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all of the hard work and dedication provided by the volunteers and staff serving The Backyard Garden Project. Their efforts in making our community a greener, more sustainable city where we can all work, play, exercise, and enjoy our families and friends contributes to the quality of life for all of us.
