It has certainly been an interesting year and a half for our Nature Kids program! Since we introduced our new after school, nature-based program, we’ve met in person, switched to online, welcomed virtual guests, and so much more.
Nature Kids began as an in-person program way back in winter 2020, when we were able to meet in person, explore all that EcoHouse has to offer, and make yummy and healthy snacks. It was a great way to make sure we stayed active, even when it was cold outside.
As the year changed, our program did too. In the summer and fall of 2020 we adapted our programs to align with public health guidelines and offered a new, self-directed, online version of Nature Kids, featuring a summer-themed BINGO card that children and families could complete at home, with the help of Green Venture activity sheets and videos. We learned how to do nature-themed yoga, make healthy smoothies, bake apple chips, and even make buckthorn ink!
Going into winter 2021, we knew that while a DIY version of Nature Kids was a lot of fun, we missed getting to meet and interact with our participants. Again we adapted, and introduced video sessions alongside our at home activities. This winter and spring, we welcomed guests to teach us about birds of prey, beekeeping, and how to get moving at home with nature-themed Zumba.
Nature Kids has wrapped up for now, and we are amazed at all the amazing things we got to do this year, and all the new friends we made. A huge thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, City Enrichment Fund, Conservers Ed Smee Fund, and the Hamilton Public Library for helping us to meet with and engage with 154 children through this program!
