Did you know that more than 30% of food produced in Canada is wasted? That adds up to about $49 billion dollars worth of food. When we add the cost of resources, energy, and labour that went into producing this food, that cost rises to over $100 billion annually. Not only is this incredibly wasteful – it is also a huge environmental problem. Food left to rot in landfills produces methane – a greenhouse gas that can hold around 28 times more heat than carbon dioxide.
Of all the food that is wasted in Canada, 21% is wasted right in our homes! That’s something we can all work to end.
That’s why we hosted Cooking for Climate – a series of free kitchen and cooking workshops that discussed simple ways we can all decrease our impact on the environment—while making something delicious.
Throughout March we joined local well-seasoned kitchen climate champs as they demonstrated some of their favourite sustainable recipes or kitchen hacks, and shared tips on how we can make our kitchens more climate friendly.
Over four weeks, we welcomed four hosts, learned six new delicious recipes, and were joined by 94 attendees! Anyone who missed our sessions can find the videos and recipes hosted on our Youtube channel here.
