Thanks to the support of amazing volunteers, funders, community partners and people like you, Green Venture has been able to engage 5700+ youth in environmental education in 2019 and more than 7000 residents in environmental action and events.
We’re proud of our new partnerships and programs. In 2019, we launched Power to Change to help residents and students make the connection between energy use and climate change, and then take action! We completed over 130 Home Energy Audits in the GTHA and helped residents retrofit their homes and improve energy efficiency that will result in 86 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas emission reductions annually over 25 years!
Our annual Seedling Sale, Seedy Saturday, Edible Garden Club, EcoHouse community garden, Hamilton Seed Library, gardening workshops, vermicomposting bins and presentations, and milkweed and native plant sales have helped people grow more local food, gain gardening knowledge, reduce food waste, and support biodiversity.
Our Catch the RAIN program installed 3 beautiful green stormwater infrastructure demonstrations sites in Dundas in 2019! We also supported 23 residents with one-on-one RAIN Coach visits helping them to identify rain garden and other green infrastructure landscaping retrofits they can make to reduce climate change vulnerability and improve water quality in Cootes Paradise.
Over 300 Fresh Air for Kids program participants learned about air quality, conducted neighbourhood air monitoring, and developed and delivered an environmental campaign to reduce idling behaviour around their school.
We are looking forward to an even more impactful 2020! We’ve set our sights on supporting more residents across Hamilton to build rain gardens, planting trees with youth and community to enhance our urban forest, adding more greenspace and ‘depaving’ paradise, providing more youth with environmental action and nature connection opportunities, and planning Hamilton’s first Zero Waste Fair.
